While we await information on the full results of the 2020 census, we already know – based on information from the U.S. Census Bureau from 2019 – that more than one-third (39.4%) of California’s population is of Hispanic or Latino origin.
More than 40% of California residents speak a language other than English at home according to a 2017 report, with nearly 19% considered limited English proficient (LEP). The Golden State ranks highest in the country for these stats.
Although not as high, Nevada census information shows more than 29% of residents with Hispanic or Latino heritage – and more than 28% speaking a language other than English at home.
The top five non-English languages spoken at home in California are Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog, Vietnamese, and Korean. Four of these – Spanish, Tagalog, Chinese, and Korean – are among the top non-English languages spoken in Nevada.
