Avoid Career Stagnation & Embrace Continuous Learning

Continuous learning tips for brokers

Every licensed insurance broker has a Continuing Education (CE) Credit requirement to maintain a resident license – and, in many cases, a non-resident license.

In California, Life agents and Accident and Health or Sickness agents need to complete a minimum of 24 CE Credit hours, including three hours of Ethics CE training, during each two-year license term. Additional training hours are required for agents selling Long-Term Care Insurance or Annuities. Visit the California Department of Insurance (DOI) web page for additional guidance.

In California, non-residents licensees can be renewed or granted a new license if they have met the education requirements of their home state.

California has a Continuing Education exemption: 1) if the broker/agent is 70 years of age or older; and 2) has 30 continuous years as a licensee in good standing in the State of California. For more information, visit the DOI website.

Nevada requires licensed insurance producers to earn 30 hours of CE during their three-year license term. Three hours of training must be in Ethics and the rest must be related to the lines of authority for which the agent/broker is licensed. A licensee can review Nevada CE Credit transcripts at Sircon.com to confirm what hours have been earned during a license period.

For information on CE exemptions in Nevada, download Nevada’s Licensing FAQs – for Applicants and Licensees.

There are multiple ways to earn CE Credits for your license renewal – and gain useful industry, product, and compliance knowledge. Read on to learn more.

Places to Earn CE Credits – and Get Other Valuable Training

Professional development is an essential part of maintaining an insurance license. It’s also key to helping you stay on top of what’s happening in the health insurance and employee benefits industry. Your CE Credits quantify your learning and reflect your dedication to serving your evolving clients’ needs.

You can get product, company, compliance, and related training through many sources:

  • In-person and online training offered through the National Association of Benefits and Insurance Professionals (NABIP) or its state chapters.
  • Online or in-person training offered by regional or local NABIP chapters like NABIP—Northern Nevada, NABIP—Southern Nevada (Clark County), the California Association of Health Insurance Professionals (CAHIP) or its regional chapters like CAHIP-Orange County, CAHIP-Golden Gate, or chapters in Central California, Inland Empire, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Silicon Valley, or Ventura County).
  • Sessions offered online, in person, or on-demand by insurance companies, administrators, or general agents (including Word & Brown’s annual Week of Webinars for California brokers) or courses offered in collaboration with industry groups like those mentioned above).
  • Education providers approved by your state insurance regulator, such as Pearson VUE in Nevada or a range of providers authorized by the California DOI.
  • Online providers like A.D. Banker, Affordable Educators, BetterCE, CE Credits Online, Kaplan Financial Education, WebCE, and others. Additional vendors can be found via a Google search.
What Continuing Learning Can Do for You

Give your career education and industry expertise a boost. In addition to helping you renew your license and prove your commitment to bettering yourself, earning CE Credits and improving your industry knowledge can:

  • increase your chances of promotion;
  • enhance your earnings (through a one-time bonus award or ongoing higher income);
  • advance your image and marketability.

Ask your colleagues, friends, and others about what they’re doing to earn CE Credits and stay on top of our constantly changing industry. Beyond your state regulator, trade groups, and your general agent, you can find valuable learning opportunities at your local community college and elsewhere.

If you’re doing business with Word & Brown, ask your rep about in-person, online, and on-demand webinars and podcasts that we offer. Not all events and training include CE Credits, but you’re sure to find a course, presentation, or program that provides you with greater insights into our industry – and information that will help better serve your prospects and customers.
