What Are Worksite and Voluntary Benefits?

If you are just starting out as an employee benefits agent or broker, and you’re selling Group Medical, it’s very likely that your clients could be interested in Ancillary benefits like Dental, Vision, or other coverage. The Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) has repeatedly reported Dental and Vision offerings by more than 90% of employers taking part in SHRM’s annual benefits survey.

Many Small Group – and Large Group – insurers offer Dental and Vision as options your clients can add to their Group Medical coverage. There are also insurers that focus primarily on supplemental coverage like Dental, Vision, Accident, Cancer, Critical Illness, Disability, Hospital Indemnity, and other products.

Word & Brown works with dozens of carriers and administrators to deliver a diverse roster of Worksite and Voluntary benefits in California and Nevada. Among the most recognized names are Aetna, Aflac, Anthem, Cigna, Delta Dental, Guardian, Health Net, Humana, MetLife, Principal, UnitedHealthcare, Unum (including Colonial Life), VSP, and others. (Link here for the full lists, organized by state and type of coverage.)

Whether you are considering adding Dental, Vision, and Life from the same carrier offering your client’s Medical plan, or want to switch it up and offer clients’ employees access to a different carrier (or multiple carriers) for added insurance, Word & Brown can help. You can add Worksite coverage partially paid for by the employer or make the additional coverage purely Voluntary, paid entirely by the employees. It’s the employer’s choice.

If you’ve been following our other broker posts, you may know that interest among employers and employees is up for Worksite and Voluntary benefits this year. That’s because the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted employers to take a second look at what they make available to employees. It has also motivated employees to reconsider their need to protect their loved ones, and think about whether Worksite and Voluntary coverage might help them “fill some of the gaps” that often exist in Medical plans (particularly if they have a High Deductible Health Plan).

An article published in March 2021 by Benefits Pro found that some Voluntary products are being offered more frequently in 2021 – with offers up by double digits for Accident (+50%), Hospital Indemnity (+35%), Legal Services and ID Theft (+30% each), and Critical Illness (+25%). HRDive noted in August that Gallagher was reporting in its Physical and Emotional Wellbeing Report an offering of AD&D by 87% of employers.
